Building the Berry Corridors

Shoalhaven River to Moyean Hill Reserve

Background
The Small Farms Network has been working with landholders in the Berry Corridors area since 2004. The main priority has been to protect Coomonderry Swamp from grazing pressure, establish vegetation corridors across the landscape and improve sustainable grazing practices through on farm extension workshops..

Regional Significance
The Berry Corridors project is focused around Coomonderry Swamp which is the largest freshwater coastal wetland in the southern region of NSW and home to the threatened Green and Golden Bell Frog. The Berry Corridors project provides a vital link from escarpment to sea and is recognised as a key vegetation corridor within the South Coast Regional Conservation Plan and Southern Rivers Catchment Management Authority (SRCMA) Community Action Plan.

Onground Outcomes
Vegetation Corridors / Shelterbelts
Since 2004, the Network has established over 11km of biodiverse vegetation corridors across 14 farms and helped protect over 1.5km of Coomonderry Swamp via stock exclusion fencing.
Dung Beetle Survey / Release

The Network has also undertaken annual dung beetles surveys and released over 8,000 beetles in order to establish late autumn / winter active species to improve soil health. Two main species have been released during this time:
* Bubas bison (mainly winter active)
* Geotrupes spiniger (spring to autumn)

Funding Partners
The Small Farms Network recognizes the following government agencies and companies which have provided funding since 2004 to make this work possible.
