Creating Biodiversity Corridors on Coomonderry Swamp, Berry

Coomonderry Swamp is the largest freshwater coastal wetland in the southern region of NSW, representing 40% of this wetland category within the State. The swamp covers 670 hectares within a 1530 hectare catchment and is home to a wide range of bird species and the threatened Green and Golden Bell frog.

The Small Farms Network successfully applied for funding under the Woolworth's Sustainable Agriculture Grant administered by Landcare Australia to establish 1.2km of shelterbelts/biodiversity corridors adjacent to Coomonderry Swamp. The project started in April 2010 and is expected to be finished by June with over 1,500 trees, shrubs and native grasses planted.

The Small Farms Network has been assisted by Conservation Volunteers Australia and two teams of volunteers. A field day and case study will be developed for the project in late 2010.

If you live in the Berry, Kangaroo Valley or Nowra Hill area and would like a similar project completed on your farm, contact Andrew on Ph: 4232 3200 or email: abritton@southerncouncils.nsw.gov.au
